Raghav… the child prodigy

Czechoslovakia … Bougainvillea…. spellings of such heavy weight words can be a challenge to anyone. To spell them backwards makes even language scholars think for a while. But there is a little wonder kid who is a master of spelling words and sentences in reverse in a flash of seconds!!!.

They say Chess is a mind game. And then playing chess blindfolded and making his own moves without any support, is a task only for a connoisseur. A young child has mastered it. And… that extremely special boy is …….. Raghav Srivathsav, fondly called Chinna.

Born on 19^th March 1998, Raghav started showing his ability to spell words in reverse order early in his childhood. The young one’s parents, Shyam Sundar and Krishnaveni, who hail from Alisagar (also called as Thanakalan) village in Yedapally Mandal of Nizamabad District, identified his unusual and special talent and started nurturing it from his childhood. He gave his first performance before a gathering at a tender age of 3 and 1/2 at his school.

Raghav’s father resigned his job as the Sub editor of the Eenadu, the leading Telugu daily, and started guiding him to attempt the Guinness Record. Raghav was labeled the “Fastest Backwards Speller in the world” on 23^rd January 2005 by Guinness Book of World Records, thus brining him accolades and recognizing his acumen of spelling backwards.

Noticing Raghav’s ability with memory and patterns, his father decided to teach him to play chess. Within short time he has started showing his ablities in chess. He won the Asian Schools Chess Silver Medal at Colombo, Sri Lanka. He also represented India in Asian chess Championship at Vietnam in 2008. In an International Fide Rated Chess tournament at Palghat in Kerala, he defeated players with higher ratings as an unrated player. Without undergoing any professional coaching, Raghav made this nearly impossible task possible and became International Fide rated Chess Player. He has also mastered the blindfold chess which requires not only the skill of playing Chess but also the ability to remember own moves as well as the opponent’s. Raghav has special ability to make his own moves without taking any help.

His talent was appreciated by many famous personalities including former Lok Sabha Speaker Sri. Somanath Chaterjee, who claimed Raghav as DESH KI SHAAN and Sri Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary.

Getting felicitated is not new to Raghav. Many organizations honored him in different ways. This 6^th standard student of Glendale Academy, Hyderabad was felicitated by the Government of Andhra Pradesh as “Child Prodigy” Award. He was honored with National Junior Excellency Award from Delhi Telugu Academy, Samaikya Bharathi Gaurav Satkar from Madras Telugu Academy, Balaratna from famous cultural organization Abhinandana, Ugadi Puraskaram from Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and “Wonder Kid” from Rotary Club of Armoor and so on. In 2006 SBH released CDs on Raghav’s achievements.

After the declaration of his entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, many regional and national newspapers covered Raghav’s accomplishment and published special columns and articles on this child prodigy. More than 15 TV channels at national level aired special news features on Raghav, including Zee TV’s, TV9, CNN-IBN, India TV, ZTV, Sahara Samay, ETV, Teja News and Hyderabad’s FM Rainbow.

Now the young one intends to create five simultaneous Limca world records on the stage in an attempt titled “GMR’s Raghav, A wonder Kid”. He attempts to play 5 famous World Champions Games from total of 24 games through blindfolded chess including forward event, reverse event from checkmate position and so on.

Raghav and his parents thank the media, the organizations and all others who have stood by their side all along. They are especially grateful to SBH, SBI and Vishwa Infrastructures & Services Pvt Limited for their constant support.
